LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena men's basketball was predicted to finish 10th while the women were slotted seventh in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Polls released Wednesday during the 2013-14 MAAC Basketball Coaches' Preview Show on ESPN3.
2013 MAAC Runner-Up Manhattan (119 votes) is the men's preseason favorite, receiving 10 of 11 first place votes. Defending MAAC Champion Iona (108) was predicted to finish second with Canisius (100) selected a close third. Rider (85) and Marist (69) round out the top-five followed by Fairfield (61), Quinnipiac (58), Niagara (39), Saint Peter's (38), the Saints (35) and Monmouth (14).
New men's head coach Jimmy Patsos looks to re-energize a Siena squad which finished ninth in the MAAC last season. The Saints welcome eight newcomers including five scholarship freshmen to a program which is coming off of an impressive showing on their foreign tour to Montreal last month.
Eight-time defending MAAC champion Marist (121) was the unanimous pick to repeat on the women's side. 2013 runner-up Iona (106) was selected second, followed by newcomer and defending Northeast Conference Champion Quinnipiac (102) which won 30 games last season. Fairfield (86) was selected fourth, followed by Rider (69), Canisius (54), Siena (51), Niagara (47), Monmouth (43), Manhattan (34) and Saint Peter's (13).
The Siena women posted a 13-18 overall record last season under first-year head coach Ali Jaques. The Saints finished tied for sixth in the MAAC and advanced to the conference semifinals.
The MAAC also announced several of its men's and women's basketball games that will be televised on the ESPN Family of Networks. The Saints' games Feb. 14 at Marist (8 PM) and Feb. 21 vs. Manhattan (Time TBD) will be broadcast on either ESPNU or ESPN3.
The complete MAAC men's and women's basketball TV schedules and Preseason All-MAAC squads will be announced at a later date.
