Loudonville, N.Y. - Siena women's basketball head coach Gina Castelli announced today the addition of Maja Gerlyng to complete the programs' incoming class. Gerlyng joins junior college transfers Charlieann Chacon and Allie Lindemann and fellow freshmen Brittany Wilwohl and Cristina Centeno as one of five newcomers to the 2008-09 squad.
"We're very excited to welcome Maja to our program," noted Castelli. "She brings strong international experience and will be a player who makes a difference and an immediate impact this season."
A 5'11" swing player from Horsholm, Denmark, Gerlyng was a key contributor the past three years for her hometown 79ers Club Team. During her time with Horsholm, the 79ers claimed the Danish National Championship in each of her seasons.
A versatile player with the squad, Gerlyng saw significant minutes at both guards and the small forward positions. During the 2007-08 season, she averaged 7.2 points per game while shooting a blistering 46% from beyond the arc. For her efforts, she was named the team's Most Improved Player.
In addition, Gerlyng participated in the Nordic Championships this summer competing for the Danish National Team. Gerlyng has also served as a past player for the Danish U-18 Team, participating twice in the Youth Nordic Championships.
Gerlyng, who will have four years of eligibility, is the first player in program history to hail from Denmark continuing a long line of European players who have worn the Green and Gold during Castelli's tenure.
In addition to the five newcomers, Siena returns two starters and seven letterwinners from last year's 11-18 team. The Saints open the 2008-09 season with a home game on Nov. 14 against Syracuse.
