Loudonville, N.Y. - Siena women's basketball head coach Gina Castelli announced today that Heather Stec has been chosen to lead the Saints as team captain for the upcoming 2008-09 season. The most seasoned member of the team, Stec is set to enter her fifth season on the squad.
"I'm honored to be named captain for this year's team," remarked Stec. "Being a fifth year senior, I feel like I bring a lot of experience to the leadership role. I look forward to working with the team in leading us to achieving our ultimate goal, winning a MAAC Championship."
A native of Cazenovia, N.Y., Stec has served as the team's starting center for each of the past two seasons. After missing the first ten games of last year due to injury, she rebounded to start each of the team's final 19 games, averaging 7.5 points.
A tenacious rebounder, Stec has led Siena on the glass in each of the past two seasons. She pulled down an average of 8.6 caroms per contest last season after finishing second in the MAAC the previous year with 8.0 rebounds per game.
"Heather has shown great leadership qualities throughout her time here in what she does and how she works," noted Castelli. "She is a hard worker and proven already by what she has accomplished that she will be a successful leader for our program next year."
The true embodiment of a student-athlete, Stec has excelled in the classroom as well as a Biology major and has been selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team each of the past two seasons. In addition, she was named the Leo Dufort Female Student-Athlete of the Month for January.
Stec will look to lead a Siena squad which is set to return two starters and seven letterwinners from last year's 11-18 team which finished sixth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
