Siena Stunned Again
Sometimes prayers are answered. Unfortunately for Siena Women's Basketball, their opponents have had two gigantic prayers answered in the past two games. Freshman point guard Tiahana Mills banked home a half court heave at the buzzer as Canisius stunned Siena 65-62 in front of a sold out crowd of 2,196 at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Just prior to tip off, the Saints will honor the accomplishments Grenci has achieved both on and off the court in her four years in Loudonville.
Academically, she became the first player in program history last fall to be named one of just 30 candidates nationally for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. Last year Grenci was one of just 11 student athletes nationally to be named to the 10th Annual Athletics Directors Association Scholar Athlete Team and was awarded entry into Siena College's Alpha Kappa Delta International Society in Sociology.
Grenci has accomplished equally impressive accolades on the court and Friday night became the 25th player in program history to score her 1,000th career point. A First Team All-MAAC selection last season, Grenci is a MAAC Player of the Year contender this year as she ranks second in the league in scoring and third in rebounding.
Siena (11-17, 7-10) will look to post its fourth straight Senior Day win and a victory would have huge implications for the Saints.
Siena enters the final day of the regular season a game back of Canisius (11-17, 8-9) for sixth place. The winner of today's battle would clinch the No. 6 seed - and an all important First Round bye in next week's MAAC Championships - while the loser will be relegated to a Thursday game in Springfield, Mass.
Siena is locked into the No. 6 seed with a win, but would fall to the No. 7 seed with a loss and a Loyola loss today at Saint Peter's, or as low as the eighth seed with a loss and a win by the Greyhounds.
Remarkably, Siena and Canisius are meeting for the second straight season in both the first and last games of the conference schedule and third straight year for the final regular season game. Siena has won each of the last two regular season finales against the Golden Griffins.
Gameday Central coverage begins at 1:30 p.m. with Mike Demos and Steve Amedio on the radio pregame show on WVCR 88.3 FM "The Saint" as well as online at SienaAllAccess.com.
