High Powered Gaels Fend Off Saints
Kanika Cummings poured in a career-high 31 points, but Iona's potent offensive attack proved to be too much as the Gaels held off Siena 86-80 in the MAAC opener for both programs.
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Women's Basketball welcomes first place Iona to town when the Saints continue their season long four-game homestand against the Gaels Saturday at 1 p.m. at the ARC. Gameday Central coverage begins with the Berkshire Bank Pregame Show at 12:30 p.m. locally on WVCR 88.3 FM "The Saint" and online at SienaAllAccess.com.
Mike Demos and Steve Amedio have the call of the game. Fans can both watch and listen to the action online exclusively at SienaAllAccess.com in addition to tuning into the radio broadcast locally on WVCR 88.3 FM "The Saint."
Siena (6-14, 1-10) hopes to open the month of February on a high note, but will have its hands full with Iona (18-2, 11-0). The Gaels currently hold the nation's fourth longest winning streak at a program record 17 games.
Iona boasts both the nation's leader in double-doubles Joy Adams (18) and assist-to-turnover ratio Haley D'Angelo (3.67). Adams also ranks fourth nationally in rebounding (13.9), while reigning MAAC Player of the Year Damika Martinez stands fifth nationally in scoring (24.4) and Sabrina Jeridore stands fifth in blocks (3.6).
The teams played to a shootout in the first meeting of the season with Iona prevailing 86-80 in New Rochelle. Kanika Cummings dropped a career-high 31 points in the loss for the Saints.
Iona has won five of the past seven overall in the series, but the Saints have enjoyed success at home almost annually against a perennially strong Gaels program. Siena has won four of the past five meetings in the Capital Region.
