This is the 69th meeting between the two teams with the Saints leading the series 41-27. Last season, the Saints took both regular season matchups and then fell to Iona in the MAAC Tournament. When playing at the Hynes Athletic Center last year, Siena defeated the Gaels 58-46, which was the fewest points allowed by an opponent at that point in the season.
On January 4, the Saints took down Iona 64-51 to then improve to 7-7 on the season and 2-1 in league play. The 13 point victory still stands as the largest margin of victory for Siena this season. It was the Saints fourth straight game shooting over 40% from the field and they tied a season-high 75% shooting from the free-throw line. Kollyns Scarbrough led the way in the game with 20 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Maddie Sims added 13 points and seven rebounds.
Siena enters the contest having won their last game against MAAC perennial powerhouse and league rival Marist 58-53. The Saints forced the Red Foxes to 21 turnovers, their most since November 30. Siena was led by sophomore guard Sabrina Piper who tallied 14 points off the bench as she tied her career record of three three-pointers made. Scarbrough notched her sixth double-double and third-straight with 13 points and 10 rebounds, nine of her points came off the free-throw line. Joella Gibson recorded a new season-high of 10 points, eight of which came from the charity stripe. Siena hit 24 free throws in the game for the most in the season, 12 of those 24 came in the final quarter and six of those 12 came with Gibson behind the line.
Iona enters the game having not won a league contest this season and falling 67-63 to Manhattan on Thursday evening. The Gaels trailed by as many as 18 but managed to get it within two points following an 18-2 run in the fourth quarter. Jayden Eggleston led Iona with a career-high 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting. She also pulled down five rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists. Iona also features seven-time MAAC Rookie of the Week selection Toyosi Abiola who is averaging 13.2 points per game.
