As a rookie for the Storm, Bird was named to the All-WNBA First Team after averaging over 14 points and 6 assists per contest. Bird is best known for her efforts while a member of the UCONN women's basketball team, where she was a two-time All-American and honored as the 2002 Naismith Award winner, as the top collegiate player in the country. Due in part to her efforts at UCONN, Bird was the first guard ever selected with the #1 overall pick in the WNBA draft.
The Siena W.A.Y. program was developed to foster interest, increase participation, and generate community involvement in sports for local youth - girls in particular. The Siena W.A.Y. program is designed to help demonstrate that the benefits of sports for youth extends beyond physical health to enhanced academic achievement, self-confidence, and improved mental health. Past Siena W.A.Y. guests have included Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes.
