Basketball standouts Brett Bisping and Tehresa Coles are the December recipients of the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award.

Bisping (Peoria, Ill.) carries a 3.39 grade point average in Siena's business school, and has emerged as one of the key members of this year's team. He is coming off a career-high 20 point performance in Siena's win over Rider Saturday night - his eighth double-digit performance in the last 12 games. Bisping is tied for the team lead with 6.1 rebounds per game (up from 2.6 last season), and is fourth on the squad with 8.3 points per game (up from 3.2 as a rookie).

Bisping was named MAAC Student Athlete of the Week (12/13/13) after double-digit efforts in both of Siena's Western New York MAAC games, and a double-double against nationally-ranked Memphis in the Old Spice Classic.

"Brett has been the hardest worker on the team since I arrived," head coach Jimmy Patsos said.

Coles (Loudonville, N.Y.) is on track to earn her degree in just three years and then pursue a master's in accounting next year. She holds a 3.28 GPA as an accounting major.

Tehresa Coles

The junior captain led the MAAC with 90 steals last season, the third most in program history, and ranked 28th nationally with 2.9 steals per game. She has started 65 of the 72 games she's played in her career, averaging 7.1 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest. Her 6.2 rebounds per game this season rank second on the team.

This past summer, Coles completed an internship at the Ayco Company, L.P., a financial counseling firm in Albany.

"Tehresa is the epitome of what you want in a student athlete," women's coach Ali Jaques said. "She excels in the classroom with a very difficult curriculum, and she's our captain and leader every time she steps on court."

The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
