LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Women's Basketball looks to ring in 2012 by winning its third straight MAAC opener when the Saints host Canisius in the conference lid-lifter Monday night here at the ARC. Gameday Central coverage begins right here at SienaSaints.com at 6:30 p.m.
The Saints (2-7) have captured their conference opener and thus also won the first game of the New Year each of the past two seasons. Last year, the Saints' MAAC-opening win propelled the squad to a six-game winning streak and a 5-0 start in conference action.
Siena is 12-10 all-time in MAAC openers as the Saints are set to embark upon their 23rd season of conference play this evening. Since joining the league prior to the 1989-90 season, the Saints are an impressive 220-143 (.606) in conference action. Since the MAAC expanded to its current 10 members during the 1997-98 season, no school has won more MAAC games than Siena (160).
The Saints will be looking to ride the wave of momentum into 2012, following an impressive 78-51 rout at Maine to close out 2011 Thursday night. If Siena hopes to get off to another hot start in 2012, they will need all of that momentum and more against an improved Canisius (6-5) squad.
Despite coming off of their worst record in 10 years and boasting one of the youngest teams in the country, the Golden Griffins' youth has come of age early this season. Canisius has won three in a row and six of nine overall despite not having a senior on a roster which includes eight underclassmen.
Siena has dominated the all-time series, winning 40 of 61 all-time meetings and head coach Gina Castelli, a 1986 Canisius College grad, sports an impressive 30-15 record vs. her alma mater. However, the series has been tightly contested of late with the programs splitting the last 14 meetings since Terry Zeh took the helm as Canisius' head coach.
