Saints End 2005 In Style, Extend Winning Streak to Five Games

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Siena women's basketball (6-4, 2-0) fought a scrappy George Mason team and were eventually victorious in a high scoring 78-69 win this afternoon at the Alumni Recreation Center. The Patriots got to within 5 points with under a minute to play but the Saints closed out with a 6-2 run to secure the fifth straight win. The Green and Gold once again had the touch from downtown as they converted on 8-of-16 shots. The Saints used the range to squelch the numerous George Mason rallies after the intermission. The Patriots took the lead 44-43 with 15 minutes left to play. Siena responded with a 24-10 run that gave the Saints their largest lead of the game. The run included a pair of treys from Lauren Surber as well as three balls from Whitney Cave, Katelyn Dooley and Melissa Manzer. After trailing 71-59, with 2:33 left to play, George Mason made their final run outscoring Siena 10-3 to cut the deficit to five with :53 on the clock. The Saints responded hitting six of their final eight free throw opportunities to close out the win. Junior Katelyn Dooley once continued her torrid shooting from downtown hitting on 3-of-5 shots to finish with 14 points and a career-high eight assists. Dooley racked up a pair of steals and hit on five of her seven shots overall in the victory. Sophomore Melissa Manzer followed up a career-high performance in scoring against St. Bonaventure with a career-high in rebounds this afternoon as she finished with eight caroms. Three of her rebounds came on the offensive glass and she finished with 11 points. Sophomore Laura Menty led the way with a game-high 22 points to go along with eight boards. Menty hit on 8-of-14 shots.
In all Siena had four players finish in double-figures as co-captain Lauren Surber poured in 12 points to go with a pair of steals. George Mason had three players finish in double-figures led by Nikkia Slade's 18 points off the bench. The Green and Gold shot 53.1% from the field for the game and limited the Patriots to 36.1% shooting. Despite outrebounding Siena 41-35, including a 25-11 edge on the offensive glass, the Patriots only outscored the Saints 21-13 on second chance opportunities. The Saints are back in action on Monday as they close out non-conference play with a 7 p.m. tipoff against Dartmouth. |
