Edoka's Career Performance Pushes Saints Past Sacred Heart

LOUDONVILLE, NY - Behind senior forward Emmanuella Edoka's career-performance in a Siena jersey, the Siena Women's Basketball team defeated Sacred Heart 62-57 in the Alumni Recreation Center on Sunday. The Saints improved to a 5-5 record with one game left in non-conference play.

Edoka scored her first career double-double after hitting a career-high 19 points and grabbing a career-high 17 rebounds. Maddie Sims was strong off the boards in her second collegiate start grabbing 10 rebounds. Aaliyah Jones scored 13 points for Siena (5-5) after going 4-4 (1.000) from the free-throw line.

Sacred Heart's (4-6) leading scorer Erin Storck, who was averaging 16.7 points per game, was held to just five points. The Pioneers were led by Tykera Carter who tallied 18 points off of 4-6 (.667) from behind the arc. Katherine Haines notched a double-double with 13 points and 21 rebounds, while Candice Leatherwood added 13 buckets.

After trailing by just five to start the final frame the Saints sped ahead and a trey by Sabrina Piper gave the Saints their final lead of the game with just under 6:30 left. The Saints kept themselves ahead of the Pioneers while keeping Sacred Heart to just 12.5% (2-16) shooting. Jones hit all four of her free throws in the final 24 seconds of the game to help push the Saints ahead and seal the 62-57 victory.

Coming right out of halftime down by just two, Edoka, who scored eight of her points in the third frame, both tied the game and put the Saints ahead with two layups, 34-32. Sacred Heart came right back into the game and knocked down three of their eight three's to take their largest lead of 10, 47-37 with just under 4:30 left. In both the fourth and third frame, Siena had eight second chance points compared to the Pioneers zero.

 

 

It was a slow start for both teams to start the game, but the Pioneers jumped ahead after shooting 57% (8-14) from the field and 50% (3-6) from behind the arc. Siena was unable to catch up in the first frame and trailed 19-14. Sacred Heart remained in the lead throughout the second frame despite Siena outshooting the Pioneers 40% to their 36%.

The Saints hit the road for their final non-conference matchup of the season on Thursday, December 21 at Hartford. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. for Hartford's annual Kids Day game.
