Senior captains Liene Jansone and Jolene Johnston each tallied a double-double to lead the Saints past Canisius, 58-56, at the Alumni Recreation Center in snow covered Loudonville, N.Y. this afternoon. The MAAC match-up was the second conference game in three days for both teams as Siena improved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in league play while Canisius dropped to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in the MAAC.
In a game that saw 11 ties, the Saints took their biggest lead of the game with a little over five minutes remaining in the first half as Nathalie Marchino sank a three-pointer to put the Green and Gold up 25-19. By the half's end the Golden Griffins got back to within two points of the Siena as Janel Stevens made a layup with 19 seconds on the clock and the two teams hit the locker rooms with a 30-28 score in favor of the home team.
Cheri Wittlieb made it a new ball game in the second as she hit a jumper just 18 seconds into the half to tie it up at 30 a piece. Siena led most of the second half, with Canisius claiming a two-point advantage on only two occasions. The Saints never led by more than five in the second half and with 3:59 left to go, Nathalie Marchino hit a jumper to bring the game into its 10th tie at 49-49. The Green and Gold managed a four-point lead, courtesy of Jansone before Canisius fought back to tie it up for the final time with 1:26 left on the clock for a 53-53 score.
After another Jansone layup that put the Saints up by two, the Golden Griffins came down the court but were halted by the tenacious defense of the Saints. Michellle Blot hit a pair of free throws to give Siena a four-point advantage with 29 second remaining, but Canisius wasn't finished just yet. The Golden Griffins made good on their next attempt down the court as Jessie Lamparski drove to the basket for a layup and was fouled for a three-point play opportunity. Lamparski sank the bonus free throw and in a matter of seconds, it was a one-point game again with a 57-56 score.
The Saints forced the Golden Griffins to foul, but Siena connected on only one of the two free throws, giving Canisius the opportunity to tie the game up with their final possession. Time ran out on Canisius, however, as they missed a jumper and the ball was rebounded by the Saints as the final two seconds ticked away.
Jansone finished the game with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Johnston also pulled in 10 caroms and put up 16 points. Nathalie Marchino recorded her second double-figure game with 11 points while adding seven rebounds.
MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Janel Stevens had a team-high 15 points while Lonnie Brown and Karly Chesko also saw double digits, netting 10 and 11, respectively.
The Saints shot over 50 percent from the floor for the first time this season, while limiting Canisius to just 38.6 percent. The Green and Gold also held a considerable advantage over the Golden Griffins in rebounding (37-21) and assists (18-13), but turned the ball over 21 times compared to just 10 for Canisius.
The Saints return to action on Thursday, December 11 as they travel to Worchester, Mass. to face the College of the Holy Cross. Game-time is scheduled 7 p.m.
