LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Liene Jansone (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary #45) led the Saints for the third straight game, netting 17 points to lift Siena to a 74-56 victory over UAlbany at the Pepsi Arena in Albany, N.Y. With the win the Saints improve to 2-1 overall, while the Great Danes drop their opener and start the season off at 0-1.
Albany took an early lead and kept it throughout the first half until junior Sherron Burgess (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse) tied it up for the Saints at 29 with a little over a minute remaining. Albany and Siena then traded baskets for the final 60 seconds as the two teams played to a 31-31 tie in the first half.
Siena came out strong in the second, going on a 15-4 run in the first 12 minutes of action. The Great Danes battled back to cut the Saint lead to seven with just 3:22 remaining, but Siena again pulled away, sinking 17 points while holding Albany to just six to take the 74-56 victory.
Jansone led all scorers with 17 points while grabbing 7 rebounds. Senior Gunta Basko (Olaine, Latvia/Riga Secondary #3) matched a season-high 16 points and recorded a game-high 9 rebounds. Erica Anderson (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) added 12 points for the Saints and recorded five assists and two steals.
The Great Danes were led by Kathryn Hemlock who managed 12 points and three rebounds while dishing out seven assists. Three other Albany players reached double-digits as Jess McGinlay, Danielle Hutcheson and Sarah Sweetland all netted 10 points. Hutchinson also pulled in a team-high 7 rebounds.
The Saints are back in action this Sunday, November 24 as they travel to Boston College to take on the nationally ranked Eagles. Game-time is set for 2:00 p.m.
