Fourth Quarter Surge Pushes FGCU Past Siena

LOUDONVILLE, NY - After a 27-point fourth quarter, NCAA contender Florida Gulf Coast pushed past Siena Women's Basketball 63-50 to start 5-0 for just the second time in the Division I era (2007-present). The Eagles were averaging 83.8 points per game before facing the Saints.

Kollyns Scarbrough led the Saints (1-3) offensively with 11 points while grabbing five rebounds. Deja Rawls grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists, while adding five points. Every Saint that entered into the game scored.

China Dow came off the bench and rattled off a game-high 20 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for FGCU (5-0).The Saints held FGCU's leading scorer Nasrin Ulel, who is averaging 20.3 points and is 24th in the nation in field goal percentage to zero points. Taylor Grandinjan added 17 points after hitting four from behind the arc.

The Saints started the fourth quarter leading 39-36 after Grandinjan hit a trey right at the buzzer that ended the third quarter. It wasn't until Grandinjan hit a free-throw with 7:59 left to play that FGCU tied it up for the sixth and final time. The Eagles then held the Saints scoreless to go up 47-44 with just over five minutes to play, but Grandinjan was there to hit another trey and put FGCU up 50-44. Down the stretch, Siena fought hard but the Eagles would take their smallest victory of the season 63-50 over the Saints.

Coming out of halftime tied up 24-24 Emmanuella Edoka put up four points as the Saints would take an early 28-25 lead into the third frame. Siena held the Eagles to one point for just under five minutes into the third quarter. FGCU would come back and go on a 6-0 run to trail 35-31 with 2:37 left in the frame. With that buzzer beater by Grandinjan, FGCU trailed by just three, 39-36.

Opening up the second quarter with a pull-up jumper, Aaliyah Jones tied it up 14-14 and later in the frame Karolina Severova's three put the Saints up 22-16. It was a back and forth second period with each team matching the others to keep it tight. Just as Deja Rawls put the Saints up 24-22, Dow from FGCU would come back and tie it up 24-24 at the half.

It was a slow start to the game as the Saints held onto a 2-0 lead for just under seven minutes left in the first quarter. Florida Gulf Coast ended the frame on an 8-3 run after back-to-back treys by Dow, who came off the bench and added 10 points in the first quarter. Siena trailed 14-12 after 10 minutes of play.

The Saints will host Howard in the first of four doubleheaders with the Siena men's basketball team at the Times Union Center on Saturday, November 25. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
