State College, Pa.- The No. 14 Penn State women's basketball team had five players total double-figure points as it cruised past Siena 90-61 in the quarterfinals of the Preseason WNIT on Sunday afternoon at the Bryce Jordan Center.
The win advances the Lady Lions (2-0) to the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT where they will face the winner of the quarterfinal game between Mississippi State and Tulsa on Wednesday, Nov. 20 beginning at 7:00 p.m. (ET) at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Kelly Mazzante led Penn State on the offensive end as she posted a game-high 33 points on 10-18 shooting. The 33 points marks the 15th time Mazzante has totaled 30 or more points in a game during her career and the first time in 2002-03. The junior guard also shot a solid 11-13 from the free throw line in the win.
The Lady Lions set the tone early in the contest as it opened with a 9-2 run over the initial 2:27. Penn State went on to open a 43-37 halftime lead before ending any hopes of a Siena comeback as it out-scored the Saints 47-24 over the final 20 minutes and limited the Saints to a 13 percent field goal percentage in the second half.
Jessica Brungo posted 14 points and eight rebounds while Tanisha Wright added 14 points and seven boards in the win. Jess Strom contributed 15 points, eight assists and five steals while Ashli Schwab tabbed 11 points and six rebounds for Penn State.
The Lady Lions out-shot Siena for the game .527 to .296 and forced the Saints into committing 26 turnovers overall.
Liene Jansone paced Siena (1-1) in the loss with a team-best 12 points. Jolene Johnstone added 11 points and eight rebounds.
