The Siena women's basketball team advanced to the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) with a 66-58 victory over Seton Hall in Siena's Alumni Recreation Center in Loudonville, N.Y. With the win the Saints earned a second round home game and will host Creighton University, who defeated the University of Maine 74-67 tonight, this Saturday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the ARC.
Siena led most of the first half but was never up by more than four points for the majority of play. In the final four minutes of the half, Siena went on an 8-2 run to take a seven-point lead and a 20-27 advantage into the locker room.
Siena continued to lead the Pirates in the second taking a nine point lead before Seton Hall went on a 17-6 run grabbing their first lead since the 12:43 mark in the first half on a three pointer by Melissa Langelier making the score 42-40. Siena countered with a 16-2 run of their own to grasp a twelve-point lead, 56-44, with 4:37 left to play. Siena managed to keep their distance from the Pirates down the stretch, taking the eventual 66-58 victory.
Four Saints scored in double figures with Liene Jansone leading the way netting 23 points. Erica Anderson finished the night with 13 while Gunta Basko and Jolene Johnston had 10 and 12 points, respectively.
Cecilia Lindqvist led the Pirates with 13 points. Ashley Bush added 12 and Langelier finished with 11 for Seton Hall.
Seton Hall won the battle of the boards, pulling in 36 rebounds to Siena's 30. The Saints shot 46.6 percent from the floor compared to the Pirate's 37.5 percent and made 14 turnovers while Seton Hall threw the ball away 22 times.
Siena will next host Creighton University this Saturday, March 22 at 7 p.m. in the Alumni Recreation Center in the second round of the WNIT.
Tickets will go on sale tomorrow, Friday, March 21. Box office hours for Friday are from noon until 6 p.m. Tickets will be available Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. and will also be available online starting tomorrow at noon.
