The Siena women's basketball team defeated Marist College, 79-62, in the second round of the MAAC Championships. With the win, the Saints improve to 23-6 overall and advance to the tournament semifinals. The Red Foxes ended their season 13-16.
Siena jumped out to an early 10-point advantage and maintained the lead throughout the entire game as the Red Foxes never managed to catch up to the Saints. Siena used a 14-3 run in the final five minutes of the first half to take a commanding 44-27 lead over Marist into the lockeroom.
Siena came out just as strong in the second, increasing their lead to as many as 22 points while keeping atleast a 14-point cushion from Marist at all times enroute to the 79-62 victory.
All of Siena's five starters reached double figures for the second time this season, with Jolene Johnston leading the way with 18 points. Liene Jansone finished the afternoon with a double double (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Erica Anderson (16 points), Gunta Basko (11 points, 7 rebounds), and Nathalie Marchino (10 points) rounded out the rest of the Saints' double figure scoring.
Maureen Magarity matched a game-high 18 points for Marist, while Kerry Sullivan and Megan Vetter also saw double figures scoring 11 points and 14 points, respectively.
The Saints shot 44.6 percent from the floor compared to the Red Foxes' 35.9 percent. Marist outrebounded Siena, 43-33, and the two teams recorded similar numbers in both turnovers and free throw percentage as the Saints handed the ball over 15 times and shot 71.9 percent from the line while the Red Foxes had 20 turnovers and shot 70.6 percent from the charity stripe.
The Saints will now face the winner of number three seed Niagara and number six seed Fairfield tomorrow, Saturday, March 8 at 1:45 p.m. The winner of that game will then advance to the Championship game on Sunday. Tip-off for Sunday is scheduled for noon.
