Gunta Basko led all scorers with 18 points in a 68-60 victory over Marist College in Siena's regular season finale at the Alumni Recreation Center Friday night. With the win, the Saints clinched at least a share of the MAAC regular season title. Siena closed out the regular season 22-6 overall and 15-3 in conference play. Marist dropped to 11-15 on the season and 7-10 in the MAAC with the loss.
Siena broke out to a 10-point lead in the first seven minutes of play, going ahead 13-3 before Marist battled their way back, cutting the Saint lead to just two at 6:38. The Red Foxes took their first lead of the half two minutes later at the 4:37 mark on a three pointer by Vicki Wancel. Up 21-18 at that point, the Red Foxes maintained their three-point lead in the final minutes of play and went into the locker room with a 25-22 advantage.
Liene Jansone scored 12 of Siena's 22 points in the first half.
Marist came out on fire in the second, scoring eight straight points in the opening two minutes to go up 33-22. The Red Foxes then maintained a lead of at least six points for a good six minutes before Gunta Basko hit a pair of three pointers to tie the game up at 41 apiece. The two teams evened three more times before Siena took the lead for good on the back end of a pair of free throws by Nathalie Marchino at the 8:32 mark. The Saints then went on an 8-0 run and connected on 12 of 12 free throws en route to the 68-60 victory.
Basko finished the night with six rebounds in addition to her game-high 18 points. Liene Jansone and Jolene Johnston also managed double figures scoring 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Three Red Foxes hit the double figure mark with Maureen Magarity leading the way with 17 points. Stephanie DelPreore led in rebounds with eight.
Siena shot only 30.5 percent from the floor compared to Marist's 43.2 percent. The Saints outrebounded the Red Foxes 44-30 and were 22 for 25 from the foul line in the second half.
In a pre-game ceremony, Siena honored its senior class of Sarah Craft, Mary McKissack, Erica Anderson and Gunta Basko, in their final game at the Alumni Recreation Center.
Currently, the Saints sit a half-game ahead of Manhattan College in the conference standings. With a win over Iona on Sunday, the Jaspers will earn a share of the regular season championship with the Saints and clinch the first seed in the MAAC Tournament.
With the regular season all wrapped up, the Saints will next head to Trenton, N.J for the MAAC Tournament on March 6-10 at the Sovereign Bank Arena.
