LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena used a 12-2 run early in the second half to pull away from Saint Peter's 85-69 in front of 2064 fans Thursday night in the ARC. The win clinched the number-one seed in the MAAC Tournament and at least a share of the regular season championship. The title is the Saints' fourth in the past five seasons. The game was also Senior Night with seniors Chrissy Loeliger and Meaghan McGonagle playing their final home games.
After Saint Peter's (21-5/14-3 MAAC) tied the game at 37 with 17 minutes left, Siena (20-5/15-2 MAAC) went on the decisive run to take a 49-39 lead with 12 minutes remaining. Siena never led by less than six the rest of the way. The Saints closed the game out by making their final 15 free throws en route to a brilliant 32 of 36 performance from the line.
Nathalie Marchino (Geneva, Switzerland/Dewitt Clinton) provided the difference by tying a career-high with 14 points off the bench. The sophomore made all four of her shots, including a pair of three-pointers. Liene Jansone (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary #45) led the way with 21 points and eight rebounds. Gunta Basko (Olaine, Latvia/Riga Secondary #3) and Erica Anderson (N. Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) scored 15 points each.
Felicia Harris led the visitors with 24 points although she fouled out with four minutes remaining. Layla Willis added 16 while Tyiana Sears scored 12.
The loss snapped Saint Peter's eight-game winning streak. Siena shot 47 percent compared to the Peahens' 37 percent. Siena also outrebounded Saint Peter's, the conference's top rebounding team, 40-34.
