The Saints starting five has done something for the first time this season, they all finished in double digit outings to defeat Saint Peter's College, 72-53 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up at the Alumni Recreation Center on Thursday evening.
The Peahens held the lead for :31 seconds in the first half in what would be there only lead of the game, once the Saints took over, they held on to the lead throughout the rest of the match. Siena pushed forward extending their lead to six points by the end of the first half. The Saints shot 39.3% (11-28) from the field and landed 42.9% (3-7) of their three-pointers, overpowering the Peahens 36.8% (7-19) from the field and one three-pointer for four attempts. The half ended 31-25 in favor of Siena.
Saint Peter's came out in the second half fighting hard and scraping for whatever chances they could take. The Peahens seemed to loose their edge as they only tallied 28 points in the final half. The Saints were able to extend the lead to as much as 21 points with 11:38 left to go. Saint Peter's refused to give up, sparked by Kristen Hood, who ignited an 8-0 run for the Peahens, but they were unable to overcome the Saints defense.
Overall, Siena shot 48.1% from the field compared to Saint Peter's 44.2%. The Saints were able to net 61.5% for three-pointers and 85.7% of their free throws while the Peahens had 22.2% on their three point shots and 72.2% from the charity line.
The game leading scorer was Siena's freshman Laura Menty with 15 points (5-8, 5-6) while Hood led the Peahens with 14 points (6-13, 2-4). Senior Lauren Surber contributed with 12 points and four steals for the Saints while junior Michelle Blot poured in 14 points (3-3 from beyond the arc), four assists and swatted two shots. Junior post Whitney Cave collected 10 points, grabbed eight boards and amass a career high seven assists. Sophomore guard Katelyn Dooley added 13 points.
For the second time this season, the Saints have held the Peahens to 53 points, with the first coming in an overtime loss 63-53 on 1/14/05.
The Saints wrap up their final home game of the season on Saturday, February 19, when they host the Broncs of Rider College at 3:00 p.m. in the ARC.
