POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Behind Rebekah Hand’s second double-double of the season Marist was able to take a 73-54 victory over Siena Women’s Basketball at the McCann Arena Saturday night. The two teams split during the regular season with both claiming the victory at home.
Siena’s (12-11, 7-5) five-game win streak was snapped, while Marist (14-10, 10-2) extended their win-streak to six games. Last season the Saints won six straight games only to be snapped by the Red Foxes. Hand, who entered the game making 49 consecutive free-throws also ended her streak at 52.
Joella Gibson led the Saints with 16 points and hitting all five of her free-throw attempts. Maddie Sims added seven points and 11 boards, while Anna Lundquist came off the bench and knocked down eight points.
Hand finished the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 11 of 12 from the charity stripe. Alana Gilmer added 16 points, while Allie Best came off the bench and tallied 12 points for the Red Foxes.
While the Saints opened up the scoring, the Red Foxes started the game on a 10-0 run to lead 10-2 early. Marist continued to hold off the Saints and led 17-8 after the first quarter. Siena went on a 5-0 run to trail by just five, 21-16, but the Red Foxes would follow that up with a 6-0 run of their own with Marist leading 27-17 at the half.
Marist opened the third frame on a 6-2 run, with all six points coming from the free-throw line. With a trey from Best, Marist extended their lead to 16 points holding a 40-24 advantage in the frame. The Red Foxes sealed the victory in the fourth quarter as they tallied 31 points, the most points scored in any quarter by a Siena opponent. Siena’s 23 points in the final frame were the most since against Niagara on January 7, but it would not be enough as the MAAC perennial power came away with the win.
The Red Foxes made 24 free throws to help give them the lead, their second most made in a game this season and most since against Rider on January 21. The Saints connected on five from behind the arc for their most since making six at Colgate on November 29.
Siena will continue on their three-game in a five-day span as they return to the Capital Region and host Monmouth on Monday, February 5. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
