Colleen Toetz led all scorers with 22 points to help Niagara to an 85-80 victory over Siena at the Gallagher Center. With the win, the Purple Eagles improve to 13-6 overall and 7-3 in the MAAC while the Saints drop to 14-6 on the season and 7-3 in league play.
Niagara scored ten unanswered points to start the game before the Saints answered back at 16:03 with two points from the line by Siena's Gunta Basko. The Purple Eagles led the entire half by as much as sixteen points in under six minutes remaining. Siena battled back tightening the margin to trail by ten at the end of the half 40-30. Colleen Toetz (Parma, OH) led the scoring for both team racking up 14 points in her fourteen minutes on the court.
Scoring went back and forth with Niagara maintaining a solid lead throughout most of the second half. Siena rallied in the end coming within two points (80-78) from Niagara with 0:49 remaining in the game on a three pointer by Erica Anderson. Niagara was fouled three times in the last seconds making five for six from the line for the win.
Toetz celebrated a game career high with 22 points topping her record of fifteen points in the game against Fairfield on January 19th, 2003. Four other players also scored double digits including Eva Cunningham (East Aurora, NY) with eighteen, Ann Mimm (Girard, PA) with fifteen, Katie Murphy (Rochester, NY) with fourteen, and Jessica Kemp (Niagara Falls, Ont.) with twelve points. Cunningham also added eight assists. As a team, Niagara shot 54.0% from the floor and 83.3% from the line.
Basko led in scoring and rebounding for the Saints with nineteen points and had fourteen rebounds. Three other Saints finished in double figures. The Saints shot 38.9% from the floor and 85.0% from the line.
The Saints will next be in action at home on Thursday, February 6 as they host the Gaels of Iona College. Game-time is set for 7:00 pm.
