Senior Gunta Basko led all scorers with 22 points to lead Siena to a 61-59 victory over Loyola College in MAAC play at the Alumni Recreation Center in Loudonville, NY.
With the win, the Saints improve to 11-4 on the season and 4-1 in conference play while the Greyhounds drop to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in the MAAC.
The first six minutes of play saw several lead changes before Liene Jansone hit a jumper to break a 13-13 tie at the 13:33 mark, giving the Saints the final lead change of the half. Siena then went on to lead by as many as nine points before Loyola fought back to tie the game up again at 22-22 with 6:19 remaining. The Saints regained the their lead and went into halftime with a three-point advantage.
Loyola hit the first basket of the second half and Shontrese Smith put the Greyhounds up 36-34 on a layup with 17:58 remaining. The lead changed three more times with the Saints capturing the final advantage on a three-point play by Jansone with 2:11 left in the game that put Siena up 53-51. Loyola was forced to foul the rest of the way and Siena hit 5 of 6 free throws to take the eventual 61-59 victory.
Jansone scored her 1,000th career point and finished the afternoon with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
Seven different Saints scored with Basko leading the way, recording her second-straight double double, grabbing 10 rebounds in addition to her 22 points. She also managed six assists.
Jennifer Mitchell led the Greyhounds with 11 points and seven rebounds. Smith also recorded double figures, netting 10 points while pulling in five rebounds.
Siena went 41.8 percent from the floor while Loyola connected on 34.4 percent of their shots. The Saints outrebounded the Greyhounds by only one (40-39) and had 11 turnovers to Loyola's 13.
Siena will return to action on Monday when they kick-off a tripleheader at the Pepsi Arena. The Saints will face St. Peter's with a tip-off of 2:00 p.m.
