Liene Jansone recorded 19 points and pulled in 17 rebounds to lead Siena College over Iona College in MAAC action this evening in New Rochelle, N.Y. With the win the Saints earned their fourth victory in the conference and now stand at 4-2 in league play and 8-7 overall. The Gaels fell to 3-10 on the season and an even 2-2 in the MAAC.
Siena used seven first-half three pointers, including four in the first 10 minutes of play to gain a 37-28 advantage over Iona as the two teams entered the locker room.
After Liene Jansone and Michelle Blot each hit a bucket they opened up the Siena three-point shooting with as they each hit a three, giving the Saints a 10-4 advantage in the first five minutes of play. Marchino and Dooley took on the Green and Gold's next two treys to open up the next five minutes of action as the Saints took an 18-10 advantage with 13 minutes to go in the first half.
With increased pressure put on by the Gaels out at the three-point line, Iona haulted all Siena scoring for nearly three and half minutes until Marchino managed a layup at the 8-minute mark to end the scoreless streak. Iona had just as much trouble over that span as the Gaels' three-point play by Michelle Fahy following the Marchino basket was the first points for Iona in almost five minutes of action as they closed the Green and Gold gap to just seven points in the process.
The Saints put away three more three-pointers to maintain their distance from the Gaels and take the nine-point lead into hafltime.
Siena shot an impressive 63.6 percent from three-point land despite shooting just 48.3 percent from the floor during the opening 20-minute stanza.
The Saints failed record a point in the opening four minutes of the second half as Jolene Johnston finally put some points up on the board for the Green and Gold. Johnston's bucket came after a 6-0 Iona run as the Saints' lead was cut to just five with a 39-34 score at the 16-minute mark.
The Saints slowly built back up their nine-point lead as a Jansone layup gave Siena a 45-36 advantage with a little under 12 minutes to play. A nearly six-minute scoreless stint by Iona allowed the Green and Gold the opportunity to increase their lead but the Saints had trouble of their own finding a bucket during the last three minutes of that stint and their lead was frozen at nine.
Back to their familiar nine-point lead with 2:39 to play, Siena outscored Iona 9-4 down the stretch for an eventual 66-49 victory.
Jansone's 19 points and 17 rebounds were both game highs. Jolene Johnston also managed double figures for Siena, scoring 12 points.
Michelle Fahy led Iona with 16 points. She was the only Gael to reach double digits.
The Saints will next face Manhattan College on Friday, January 16. Game-time is scheduled for 7pm.
