Benitez's 34 Points Propel Siena Past Monmouth

ALBANY, NY - Behind Jackie Benitez's 34 points, Siena women's basketball dominated Monmouth 85-76 at the Times Union Center. The Saints shot 52.5-percent from the floor, their best percentage this season as a team.

Benitez's 34 points were also a MAAC season-high, and she is now the only player this season to score 30 or more points twice. She shot 10-13 (.769) from the field and 6-for-7 from trey (.857). Kollyns Scarbrough and Meghan Donohue added 11 points each for the Saints.

Freshman Kayla Shaw recorded a team-high 19 points for the Hawks. Alaina Jarnot tallied 13 points while McKinzee Barker added 10.

After Monmouth started the contest on a 7-0 run, the Saints then went on a 22-7 run to take a 22-14 lead after the first quarter. Siena shot 61.5-percent (8-13) from the field, their fourth time this season they shot over 60-percent in a quarter.

Siena continued to be hot from the floor en route to outscoring the Hawks 26-20 in the second quarter to take a 48-34 lead at the half. The Hawks attempted a comeback and outscored Siena 19-18 in the third quarter, but the Saints would lead 66-53 going into the final ten minutes.

Siena shot six-for-eight (.750) during the fourth quarter, their second highest shooting percentage during a quarter this season. While Monmouth would continue to fight for a MAAC victory, the Saints were able to hold off the Hawks and took their fifth straight from Monmouth with an 85-76 victory.

Joella Gibson recorded nine points for the Saints, while grabbing six rebounds. Deja Rawls dished out a team-season high seven assists while Sabrina Piper added five. Siena drained eight three's, their most in a game since they recorded 10 against UNH on Dec. 6. Siena scored 33 points off of turnovers and 42 of their points came from in the paint.

The Saints head back to the Alumni Recreation Center on Sunday, Jan. 15 for Alumni Day and Bobblehead giveaway against Saint Peter's. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
