The Siena College women's basketball team improved to 9-3 on the season, 3-0 in MAAC play, after a 70-52 win over Iona College Monday night at the Mulcahy Center. The victory marks the fifth-straight for the Saints. With the loss, Iona falls to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Siena controlled the game from the outset with a 19-2 run over the first 7:30 of the opening half. The Saints never looked back, holding a wire-to-wire lead.
Iona trailed 34-18 at the half, but battled back to cut the Saints' lead to 10, at 48-38, with 11:36 remaining in the game. Senior Renee Gaudette (Watertown, MA) found Fahy underneath for a lay-in and a foul with 8:00 left. The free throw would have sliced Siena's advantage just nine, but Fahy missed and the Saints immediately went on a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to retain control and the game's momentum.
Four Saints scored in double figures with Erica Anderson leading the way netting 19 points, including five three pointers. She also dished out a team-high five assists. Gunta Basko finished the evening with 11 points while Nathalie Marchino and Shimrit Gigi added 10 apiece.
Both teams shot the ball well, with Siena registering a 47.6 percentage from the field and Iona hitting at a 44 percent clip. The Gaels were 4-for-9 from three-point range while the Saints made six of 16 from beyond the arc.
Michelle Fahy (Galway, Ireland) led the Gaels with 14 points while Felicia Holloway (Severn, MD) added 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Saints return to action this Friday, January 10, when they host Manhattan in a double-header with the Siena men's team at the Pepsi Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. with the men to follow at 8:00 p.m.
