LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Men’s Tennis sophomore Matt Bellino and women’s swimming & diving senior Brigid Wynne have been named Siena College’s Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the Month for January. The two are being honored for their success both in the classroom and in their respective sports.
This season, Wynne has set personal bests in the 200 yard freestyle and 50 yard backstroke. Both personal records were set at the ECAC Championships with respective times of 2:01.79 and 29.16. She was part of the team that won Siena’s first ECAC Championship in 2015-16. She has helped the Saints win 5th twice and 7th in the MAAC Championships. At Saint Peter’s, Wynne won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 26.02. She was one of six individuals to win an event to help the Saints beat the Peacocks 144-56 in January.
Wynne boasts a 3.71 cumulative GPA in mathematics and spanish education, while earning a 3.73 this past semester. She plays an active role in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee as she is the secretary and compliance executive committee member. Wynne is also in charge of assisting with the recording of community service hours for the athletic department. Wynne has also just accepted a position as a Teach for America teacher come graduation.
This season, Bellino has a 3-5 overall record and 1-0 conference record in singles play with the spring season just beginning. He has played in the four, five and six singles positions for the Saints during this year. He is 4-3 in doubles with five of his matches being play at doubles one. Bellino has played doubles with Guillermo Lopez Torres and tallied a 3-2 record and with Alessandro Saglia where the two have gone 1-1.
Bellino has a 3.5 cumulative GPA in Finance. He has been involved with the Saints in the Community programs as has most recently participated in the 15Love event. During this event, he along with his fellow teammates teach local area kids tennis skills. Bellino has been named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team.
The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
