LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Former Siena Soccer standout Joey Tavernese '11 is returning home to continue his professional career. The Garden City, N.Y. native has signed a one-month contract with the Rochester (N.Y.) Lancers of the Major Indoor Soccer League.

Tavernese and the Lancers came to terms Thursday and he is expected to be active for Rochester's upcoming home game Saturday at 7 p.m. against the Syracuse Silver Knights. Rochester is in its second year of existence in the MISL.

Tavernese began his pro career in the summer of 2011, playing in 11 games with FC New York of the United Soccer League. At the time he joined former teammate Steve Covino, who also signed with FC New York, as the first two student athletes in Siena Soccer history to ink pro deals.

The Saints' former captain enjoyed a tremendous season last year with Armadale SC, an Australian Club which competes in the Premier Division of the Football West State League. Tavernese led Armadale in goals (10) and assists (12) and was rewarded with a call-up to the First Division's Perth Glory.

Tavernese starred at Siena from 2007-10 and appeared in a team record-tying 75 matches. He stands 10th in program history with 39 career points and his 17 assists are third most. During his senior season he tied for the MAAC lead with a program single season record-tying nine assists.
