Nov. 20, 2012
Soccer student athletes Caitlin Cahalan and Daniel Alderstad are the recipients of the October Leo Dufort's Student Athlete award. The award recognizes two players each month who epitomize the term student athlete.
Caitlin Cahalan (Cohoes, N.Y.) will be graduating in May with a finance degree and currently maintains a very impressive 3.9 GPA.
"It is a great honor to receive the Leo Dufort Award," Cahalan said. "As a student-athlete, I try to be the best of both, the best student I can be and the best athlete as well."
"I think being a student athlete means working tirelessly at high achievement on the field and in the classroom, and being involved in clubs and on committees that benefit contribute to the development of Siena College," she continued. "I am truly blessed and grateful for being named Student Athlete of the Month."
On the field, Cahalan led the team in every offensive category and was named to the MAAC First team, tallying six goals and five assists.
Alderstad, a native of Solna Sweden, maintains a grade point average of 3.54 including a 3.8 for this previous term.
"Daniel is a low maintenance student athlete and someone who is easy to coach," head coach Gareth Elliott said. "He gives maximum effort in the classroom and on the pitch which you can see through his success with the team late in the season. He is a very intelligent player and student."
On the field, Alderstad ranked second on the squad in goals, assists, and points and also helped bring the Saints earn the number two seed in the MAAC Tournament.
The Leo Dufort Student-Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student-Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
