Men's soccer freshman forward Emery Welshman won Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and was named to the All-MAAC Second Team and the All-Rookie Team Thursday evening. Welshman led the team and ranked eighth in the league in scoring with 15 points. He is the first Siena player to win Rookie of the Year since Liam Welsh did so in 2004.
Welshman enjoyed a breakout season for the Saints, scoring six goals and adding three assists. He started all 19 games and was a threat every time he touched the ball. Welshman scored the golden goal in double overtime to beat Boston College on the road and scored six points (2G, 2A) in a 4-3 win over Rider.
Viaggio had a terrific comeback season after missing all of 2008 due to injury. He started all 19 games at center back and contributed to the defensive improvement from last season. Siena allowed 4.5 less shots/game from last season and dropped its goals-against average from 1.56 to 1.39. Viaggio even produced offensively, tallying one goal and two assists.
Ek started all 19 games and split time at outside mid and forward. He ranked second on the team with 12 points on five goals and two assists. He led the team with two game winning goals.
Opalka solidified a Siena defense that lost two starters from a year ago. He started 14 games at center back and imposed his will on attacking players. Opalka assisted on Siena's only goal against regular season champion Iona.
Siena finished the season with an 8-8-3 overall record and 3-4-2 in the MAAC.
