On the eve of their MAAC Tournament semifinal showdown with Iona, Siena was honored with numerous MAAC awards. Their achievements both on the pitch and in the classroom were recognized at Thursday night's tournament banquet.
Most notably, sophomore forward Emery Welshman was tapped as the conference's Offensive Player of the Year. The Ontario native made the leap from MAAC Rookie of the Year to the top offensive player in the conference with an outstanding season. He led the MAAC with 13 goals and 29 points in just 15 games played, and anchors the All-MAAC First Team.
Additionally, several other Saints were named to other all-conference teams. Senior midfielder Steve Covino, sophomore forward Sindre Ek, and redshirt junior back Nick Viaggio were All-MAAC Second Team selections, while midfielder James Beeston and back Mike Matera were named to the All-MAAC Rookie Team.
Finally, senior goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny, junior back David Bonzerato, and sophomore backs Chris Medina and Jannis Opalka were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better on a 4.0 scale.
Siena's battle with Iona is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Loyola on Friday. A live blog of the event will be held at this link, starting at approximately 2:45.
