Men's soccer senior Nick Theobald and volleyball junior Erin Bies are the September recipients of the Leo Dufort Siena College Student Athlete of the Month award. Theobald and Bies have achieved athletic success while excelling in the classroom and giving back to the community.

Theobald, a senior captain from Mississauga, Ontario, has started 53 of the 58 games he's played in his career including all 13 contests this season. As an outside back/midfielder, he is a key cog on a Siena defense that has posted four clean sheets and allowed less than a goal per game this season. Theobald netted his second career goal on a penalty kick in the Saints' 2-1 win over perennial regional power Brown on September 5, and it proved to be the game-winning tally. Off the field, he carries a 3.23 GPA in economics.

Erin Bies
Bies, a junior from Massapequa, N.Y., has appeared in all 19 matches for Siena's resurgent volleyball team, primarily as a defensive/serving specialist. She has averaged 2.0 digs per set and tallied a career-high 13 aces with at least 13 matches remaining on the schedule. Bies holds a 3.37 GPA in social work, and is one of Siena's most altruistic student athletes. She's made three separate service missions to Africa since arriving in Loudonville, and was featured in the NCAA News magazine for her work with Operation Hearts and Home in the wake of having her home destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.

Theobald and Bies have their teams in the thick of the MAAC race. Men's soccer is tied for first place in the conference with a 3-1 MAAC mark, while volleyball sits in third place at 6-2, just one game behind first place Marist.

The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
