Men's Soccer Makes Home Debut this Friday
Sept. 9, 2010
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena men's soccer hosts Colgate in its home opener at Siena Turf Field this Friday at 3 p.m. The new look Saints have played an exciting brand of soccer thus far, crushing Syracuse 5-1 last week and losing a double overtime battle to Sacred Heart 2-1 Tuesday evening. Friday's game will be streamed live on www.SienaAllAccess.com with pregame coverage beginning at 2:45 p.m. Mike Demos has the call. After a lightning fast start at Syracuse, Siena stumbled at Sacred Heart on Tuesday. Injuries have been a storyline and forced head coach Gareth Elliott to play a young and unfamiliar back line together. The Saints started three freshmen (Falko Friedrichs, Mike Matera, James Beeston) and sophomore Jannis Opalka last game. So far, they've met the challenge and allowed the second fewest shots on goal in the league (3.5/game). Sindre Ek scored Siena's lone goal at Sacred Heart, his first of the season. He has four goals in his last seven games dating back to October 23 last season. Ek scored in the 2nd minute of last year's meeting with Colgate but the Raiders scored twice in the final 11 minutes to win 2-1. Sophomore Emery Welshman, the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, leads the team with five points. He left last game due to injury and is questionable for the home opener. Siena is 3-0-2 in its last five home openers and defeated URI in double overtime last season (watch below). Notes: Entering this week, Siena was ranked seventh in the NSCAA's North Atlantic rankings...Siena is 0-11-1 all-time against Colgate...Center back Nick Viaggio missed last game and forward Emery Welshman left after 16 minutes due to injury...Falko Friedrichs, a freshman center back from Germany, leads the team with six shots on goal this season.
