LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - For the second time in their collegiate careers, senior back Jannis Opalka and junior midfielder James Beeston have been selected as team captains for the Siena Soccer program. Opalka served as a team captain two seasons ago, while Beeston will captain the program for the second consecutive year.
"Jannis and James complement each other well as leaders on and off the field for us," said head coach Gareth Elliott. "Jannis leads more by example, while James is more vocal and keeps everyone on their toes. Together, they are two great personalities and leaders for us heading into this season."
A Preseason All-MAAC selection entering this season, Opalka was a Second Team All-MAAC selection last year and was selected to the All-Rookie Team following his freshman campaign. Last season he started all 17 games at center back, anchoring a Siena defense which tied a program record with just 16 goals surrendered and ranked 34th nationally with a 0.89 goals against average. For his efforts, he was named an NSCAA Scholar All-American, NSCAA Scholar All-East Region pick and North Atlantic Third Team selection.
Siena's Male Rookie of the Year and a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection two seasons ago, Beeston led the Saints in 2011 with four assists. He started all 16 games he played at midfield during his sophomore season and already ranks tied for fourth all-time in program history with 13 career assists.
Opalka, Beeston and the Saints kick off the 2012 season Friday night at North Florida in the Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament at 7 p.m.
