LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - John Ciano, who spent the past two seasons on Cesar Markovic's staff at NJIT, has followed him to Siena as an assistant coach with the men's soccer program. A 2009 graduate of Manhattan College, Ciano brings four years of collegiate coaching experience with him to Loudonville.
"I am extremely happy and very lucky to have Coach Ciano follow me to Siena," said Markovic. "He is truly one of the best young assistants in college soccer. Coach Ciano will be a tremendous asset to our program and is an incredibly loyal and hardworking individual who has a great future in the game."
A four-year collegiate starter in goal at Central Connecticut (2005) and Manhattan (2006-08), Ciano was an assistant coach under Markovic at NJIT and spent a lot of time working with goalkeepers. Inheriting a goalie corps that had posted a 2.03 goals against average in the year before his arrival, the Highlanders keepers improved to a 1.67 goals against average and three shutouts in his first season and a 1.44 goals against average and five clean sheets last fall.
Ciano played a key role in helping Markovic lead NJIT to their best mark at the Division I level last fall in posting a 10-9 record. The Highlanders were ranked in the NSCAA North Atlantic Poll throughout the season, achieving a peak ranking of third.
Ciano began his coaching career at Division III Manhattanville College from 2009-10. In his two seasons, Ciano helped guide the Valiants to a 23-11-2 record including the 2009 Freedom Conference Regular Season Championship.
As a student athlete, Ciano played his freshman season at Central Connecticut before transferring to Manhattan for his final three seasons. He appeared in 46 games making 45 starts as the Jaspers' keeper. Ciano, who was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week once during his sophomore season and was named to the conference's All-Academic Team, graduated cum laude from Manhattan.
A native of Syosset, N.Y., Ciano has played for numerous clubs including the Jersey Express, Brooklyn Knights and Long Island Rough Riders of the United Soccer League. Ciano holds a USSF "D" License and both an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and National Goalkeeper Level III Diploma.
Since 2010, Ciano has served as a coach with the Eastern New York ODP squad and is currently a coach on the US Region I ODP staff.
Ciano joins a Siena Soccer program which posted a 10-7 overall record last fall and a 6-1 mark in the MAAC.
