Men's Soccer Falls to Saint Peter's

Nov. 2, 2003

Box Score

Senior forward Rinaldo Chambers, playing the last home game of his college career, scored the first goal and then assisted on the next three, leading Saint Peter's to a 4-1 win over visiting Siena in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer Sunday afternoon.

It was the final regular season game in 2003 for both teams and Saint Peter's finishes at 14-4-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the MAAC. The 14 wins are a school record, surpassing the 13, which was done in 1978 (13-3) and 1979 (13-1-1). The 5 MAAC wins were also the most in 23 seasons of conference play. The Peacocks had reached 4 wins four times before, including 4-4-1 in 2002.

Siena completes the regular season at 6-11-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the MAAC. The Saints could have tied for first place with a win, but instead tie Saint Peter's for third place at 16 points in the standings. Both teams will play in the MAAC postseason tournament, which will be held from Wednesday through Sunday at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Florida.

All 10 MAAC men's teams are in this year's postseason tournament (when the tournament is played at a conference school, only the top four teams qualify). The tournament champion gets an automatic NCAA Division I tournament berth.

Chambers (Brooklyn, NY/Humanities HS) was honored in pre-game ceremonies and it didn't take long for him to impact the game, as he scored at 1:36, finishing a direct free kick by Vicente Caldas (Queens, NY/International HS).

Siena responded with high-energy pressure, but Saint Peter's used its superior speed and quickness to add a second goal at 15:51 by sophomore Chris Megaloudis (Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancy HS), assisted by Carlos Villacres (Brooklyn, NY/Grover Cleveland HS) and Chambers.

Trailing at the half, 2-0, Siena again applied pressure to open the second half, but Saint Peter's, counterattacking, got its third goal in the 68th minute, as Megaloudis scored his 2nd goal of the game and his 9th goal of the season, assisted by Chambers and defender Pablo Orantes (Queens, NY/Flushing HS), who began the play from the back.

Villacres got the Peacocks' fourth goal just over three minutes later, assisted by Marco Orias (Newark/St. Benedict's Prep) and Chambers, whose goal and three assists upped his season totals to 10 goals and 15 assists.

Siena averted the shutout on a successful penalty kick by sophomore Caio Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) at 80:23.

Each team used two goalkeepers. For Saint Peter's, John Moschella (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell HS) played the first half, allowing no goals and making 4 savers. Pat Nagawiecki (Barrington, IL) played the second half, saving 3 shots and allowing the penalty kick goal. Siena starter Patrick Henry (LaGrangeville, NY) played the first 74:46, allowing all four goals and making 4 savers. Ryan Jordan (Monroe, NY) played the last 15:14 without a save or goal allowed.

Saint Peter's had a slight 17-16 edge in shots.
