Freshman forward Sindre Ek scored in the 81st minute to tie the game 1-1 and earn Siena men's soccer a much needed tie and point in the crowded MAAC standings Friday evening in Niagara University, N.Y. The Saints sit in fourth place with 11 points and two games left to play.
Niagara (5-8-2, 3-2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute of the game on a goal by Bryan DaCruz.
Siena (8-6-3, 3-2-2) outshot Niagara 19-12 and 10-2 in the second half. Goalkeepers John Fiutowski (eight saves) and Phil Chabot (four saves) kept their teams in the game, allowing just one goal each in 110 minutes.
Ek scored the equalizer with just over nine minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime. The ball was deflected and the whipping wind brought the ball to his feet and he labeled his shot in the upper-90. Ek has scored some timely goals this season. On September 11, Ek scored with 23 seconds left in the game to give Siena a 3-2 victory over St. Bonaventure. He scored Siena's only goal 78 seconds into the game at Colgate to give his team an early lead. Ek scored the game winner against Rider last week with 13 minutes left.
Siena completes its western New York trip on Sunday at Canisius. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
