Tom Santoro netted the gamewinner just four minutes into the first overtime period to give Siena College the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over Iona College this afternoon at Siena Field on Senior Day. With the win the Saints improve to 6-9-1 on the season and 5-1-1 in MAAC play while the Gaels drop to 5-10-3 overall and 2-6-1 in the league.
Both teams battled to a 0-0 deadlock at the end of the first half. Each team saw a couple of scoring opportunities, with Siena holding a slight 4-3 shot advantage, but neither squad was able to put away a goal in the first 45 minutes of play.
The second half proved much different, as the Saints found the back of the net first with a goal at the 68:02 mark. Joe Vitale made a centering pass that Delmiro Fernandez got his foot on to give Siena the 1-0 advantage. Iona struck back nearly ten minutes later as Michael Marcellino broke away from the Siena defense, setting himself up for a one vs. one opportunity with keeper Patrick Henry. Marcellino sent the ball past Henry to tie the game up at one apiece. Siena and Iona had a scoreless battle for the remaining of the second half as the clock ran out on the two teams sending the game into overtime.
It was all Green and Gold in overtime play as the Saints outshot the Gaels 4-0. After nearly ending the game moments earlier on a good look at the cage by C.J. Melilli, the Saints put the gamewinner away at the 6:00 mark as Melilli sent a pass across the cage directly to the head of Santoro who in turn rocketed the ball into the back of the net for the victory.
The Saints outshot the Gaels 13-8.
Patrick Henry made three saves in the cage for the Saints while Patrick McAllen had one stop for Iona.
The Saints will head into their last MAAC weekend of play next Friday as they travel to Manhattan to face the Jaspers. Game-time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
