The Siena men's soccer team fell to 1-10-4 on the season as Fairfield edged the Saints 2-1 this afternoon at Lessing Field in Fairfield Connecticut.
The Stags took the lead early in the game, netting the first goal just six minutes into the contest. Dave Thomas sent a ball through the Saints defense, which landed on the foot of Gaughan in the left corner of the box. Gaughan beat his defender and released a shot from 15 yards that caught the far lower corner of the goal.
In the second half, freshman Mike Scott raced down the right sideline and cut toward the goal, drawing the inside defender. He lofted a cross over the defender's head, to Gaughan cutting down the middle of the box. Gaughan headed the ball into the top of the goal for a 2-0 Fairfield lead.
Siena made the game interesting when Tom Santoro converted a penalty kick opportunity in the 74th minute, beating Fairfield goalkeeper Andrew Frankel to the right side. Recording his sixth goal of the season. Both teams had opportunities to score over the final 10 minutes, but neither defense could muster another goal.
Saints goalie Patrick Henry tallied three saves on the day. Frankel made two saves in recording the win.
