New Rochelle, NY - The Iona men's soccer team lost 4-3 to the visiting Siena Saints Sunday at Mazzella field. The loss dropped the Gaels to 0-12-1 on the season, 0-3 in the MAAC.
Siena opened the scoring just 3:15 into the first half on a Donald Hathorn goal, and the Saints extended their lead to 2-0 less than five minutes later on a Joe Vitale goal.
The Gaels, however, came storming back at the 10-minute mark when freshman Abullah Begai (Staten Island, NY) scored his second goal of the season on an assist by fellow freshman Giovanni Treglia (Jericho, NY).
Down 2-1, Begai and Treglia connected for the tying score in the 16th minute as Begai netted a narrow-angled shot.
The game stayed tied until late in the half when a Siena foul was whistled less than 10 yards from the Saints' net. With a wall of defenders seemingly covering the entire goal, the Gaels ran many players around the set ball in an attempt to obscure the play. Sophomore Michael Marcelino (Pelham, NY) finally handled the kick and led a pass for Treglia, who blasted a kick from the right side and through the entire Siena team for a 3-2 lead going into the half.
The goal was Treglia sixth on the season. He is among the conference leaders in goals and total points.
The second half opened with a quick goal from Siena to tie the game at 3-3 in the 48th minute. The teams played aggressively with the score tied, until the Saints scored the game winner in the 70th minute on Hathorn's second goal of the day.
The Gaels were outshot 22-17 for the game.
Although Siena was whistled for 25 fouls to Iona's 15, the Gaels were signaled for four yellow cards to the Saints' two cautions.
Siena improved to 1-6-1 on the season, 1-0 in the MAAC.
The Gaels return to action Tuesday when they travel to Easton, PA, to face Lafayette in a non-conference match.
Siena next faces non-conference opponent Colgate in Hamilton, NY.
