The Saints have matched their best MAAC start in program history
Oct. 12, 2012
Sindre Ek continues to amaze. The senior striker scored just 31 seconds into overtime as Siena Men's Soccer defeated Rider 2-1 Friday night in Lawrenceville, N.J. With the win, the Saints matched their best conference start in program history at a perfect 3-0.
The reigning MAAC and College Sports Madness Player of the Week, Ek wasted no time in leading Siena (7-5, 3-0) to its fifth win in its past six matches. After Matt Hemsley had his shot blocked by a Rider (2-9-1, 1-1-1) defender, the rebound found the foot of Ek who blasted home the golden goal.
Ek, who entered the week tied for the conference lead in scoring, has now totaled 21 points on nine goals and three assists this season. The decisive tally marked his third game-winning goal of the year and seventh for his brilliant career.
Siena secured a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute on freshman Nils Weddig's second goal of the season. James Beeston assisted on the play, in the process moving into a tie for second place on the program's all-time career assists list with 17.
Rider tied the game in the 72nd minute on a Dave Benavidez goal from James Greco. The Broncs out-shot the Saints 17-16 and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Damian Liesemann made four saves for the Saints, while Matt Perrella stopped five shots for the Broncs.
The Saints will look to start 4-0 in the MAAC for the first time in program history Sunday when they travel to Loyola for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
