Loudonville, N.Y. - Siena sophomore forward Anthony Tagliaferri notched the game winning goal in the 86th minute to lead the Saints to a 1-0 victory over league rival Rider (5-5-1, 0-1-1) this afternoon in Loudonville. The victory marks Siena's (4-5-2, 1-1-0) first conference win of the 2007 campaign.
Both squads stood strong through the first 45 minutes of what proved to be a defensive stalemate. They entered intermission stuck at a scoreless tie.
The Saints offensive attack picked up in the second half as they outshot the Broncs 7-5.
At the 85:59 mark, Tagliaferri connected on the lone goal of the contest which proved to be the game winner. Senior co-captain Jason Laffin sparked a Siena break pushing the ball past midfield. Laffin sent a lead pass to Joe Tavernese who found fellow freshman Steve Covino on the right side. Covino juked his defender sent a cross pass to Tagliaferri who finished the play.
Siena's superb defensive efforts anchored by senior Liam Welsh, Kevin Gluchowski and Daniel Aucar helped preserve the shutout.
Freshman goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny notched a game-high four saves earning his fourth victory in net of the season.
With the victory, the Saints improve to 4-5-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the MAAC. Siena returns to action Friday when they square off with Canisius in Buffalo. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
