2014 Siena Grads Sign with Western Mass Pioneers
Steve Covino '10 begins his third season in his second stint as an assistant coach with the Saints. He served as a volunteer assistant on staff during the 2011 season.
Last season Covino helped guide the Saints to several notable achievements. Siena posted a 10-8-2 overall record including a 5-3-2 mark in league play which secured the Saints the No. 5 seed in the MAAC Championships. Siena's 10 wins were tied for the second most in program history and the Saints achieved the program's first-ever undefeated home season (6-0-2). Additionally, the Saints started a perfect 4-0 for the first time in program history, which included a victory over 23rd ranked Boston University. For two consecutive weeks in mid-September the Saints received votes in the NSCAA Top-25 Poll with a peak of 24 votes on Sept. 16 which marked the 32nd highest total in the nation. The Saints were also ranked as high as second in the Northeast in the NSCAA's regional rankings the week prior.
A native of Bristol, Conn., Covino was named to the NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-North Atlantic Region Team and to the All-MAAC Second Team as a senior midfielder for the Saints in 2010. That season he posted career highs with eight goals and 20 points. Covino played in 71 games over his career with the Saints, making 69 starts. He was also named to the All-MAAC Second Team following his sophomore season.
Covino became the first student athlete in Siena Soccer history to sign a professional contract, inking a deal with FC New York of the United States Soccer League in 2011. He previously played in the PDL with the Western Mass Pioneers in 2010 appearing in 14 matches and scored a goal. Most he recently he played with theConnecticut FC Azul of the Premier Development League of the United Soccer League in 2012.
