LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Lacrosse Head Coach John Svec has named four student athletes as his program's 2014 team captains. Red-shirt seniors Mike Battaglia and Kyle Curry, red-shirt junior Richie Hurley and junior Ryan Mallon have been selected to lead the team both on and off the field this spring.
"The leadership skills and team-first mentality that these four young men have exhibited make them great examples of being successful student athletes here at Siena College," said Svec, who enters this third season this spring. "Their teammates and coaches could not be more proud of them. I am grateful for their contributions to the program both on and off the field and look forward to their leadership for the coming season."
A native of Loudonville, Battaglia enters his second season as a team captain. He appeared in 17 games on defense last season, picking up 17 groundballs and casing six turnovers.
A two-time MAAC All-Academic Team selection, Curry returned from injury the previous season to post career-highs of 26 points on 22 goals last spring. The Littleton, Mass. native appeared in all 17 games at midfield and tied for the team lead with a pair of game-winning goals.
Hurley was a Second Team All-MAAC selection in 2013 after ranking tied for second in the conference in scoring with 49 points on the strength of 30 goals. The attackman out of Setauket, N.Y. tied for the conference lead with 17 goals in MAAC games and tallied a point in all 17 games.
A midfielder from New Fairfield, Conn., Mallon secured a starting assignment in 13 games and appeared in all 17 contests in the spring. He tallied 10 points and was amongst the team's leaders with 35 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers.
The quartet will lead a Siena program which posted an 8-9 overall record last spring and advanced to the MAAC Championship Game for a fifth consecutive year.
