LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena lacrosse senior Cara McQuillan from the women’s team and senior captain Ryan Ghaderi a from the men’s squad have been selected as Siena College’s Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the Month for February. The pair is being honored for their success both on the lacrosse field and in the classroom.
McQuillan has played in 60 games for the Saints over her four year campaign. The senior midfielder has recorded 53 goals and 11 assists. She has also picked up 58 ground balls, caused 15 turnovers and won 18 draw controls. McQuillan was an All-Rookie MAAC Team selection her freshman season after tallying 16 points on 14 goals and picking up 11 ground balls. She recorded a hat-trick on April 18, 2015 against Quinnipiac. This season she is in the top-five scorers for the Saints.
The East Meadow, New York native has a 3.78 grade point average in accounting after boasting a 3.82 GPA in the fall. She was named to the IWLCA Zag Sports Division I Academic Honor Roll along with the MAAC All-Academic Team. McQuillan is part of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) which is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in an undergraduate or master’s program at a school that is accredited by AACSB International. She is also a part of the 21st Century Leaders Society which is an honor society for the School of Business majors. Members are selected based on a combination of academic achievements and demonstrated outstanding leadership characteristics.
In the classroom as a philosophy major, he has a 3.55 cumulative GPA and achieved a 3.57 GPA during the fall semester. Ghaderi was named the 2016 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Sport Semi-finalist as well as being the 2017 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Team Winner.. He has been named both a MAAC All-Academic Team and Academic Honor Roll selection the last two seasons. Ghaderi has also completed volunteer work with Immokalee Workers in both Florida and Chile and is a graduate of an Outward Bound Program. Ghaderi is the co-president of Phi Sigma Tau International Honors Society in Philosophy.
The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
