Morr, Sandhu Receive Leo Dufort Honors

March 24, 2011

Tom Morr of the men's lacrosse team and Jasleen Sandhu of the women's tennis team have been selected as the Leo Dufort Student-Athletes of the Month, representing February. These two athletes represent excellence both on the field and in the classroom.

A red-shirt junior from Rockville Centre, N.Y., Morr has been a major part of Siena lacrosse's recent five-game winning streak. The captain has been the starting goalkeeper all year, and is 6-2 with a .605 save percentage and an 8.39 goals-against average. A history major, Morr carries a 3.45 cumulative GPA, and is a two-time MAAC All-Academic Team selection.

Meanwhile, Sandhu has been the driving force behind the Siena women's tennis team. The junior has gone a perfect 6-0 in 2010-11, with all of her matches coming at #1 singles. Her academic record is just as impressive, as she carries a 3.93 cumulative GPA while majoring in economics.

The Leo Dufort Student-Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student-Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
