Siena lacrosse captains Collin Parkhurst and Amanda Peguillan have been named Siena’s Leo Dufort Student Athletes for the Month of February.  Both athletes are seniors and captains for their respective teams.

Parkhurst, a mathematics major, currently maintains an impressive 3.37 GPA and is one of the team’s representative for the school’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC).   The Croton on Hudson, N.Y., native is also involved in community outreaches which helped Siena win the MAAC Goodworks Challenge last year.  Parkhurst aspires to use his Siena degree to become a math teacher after graduation.

“He works extremely hard on the field and in the classroom,” men’s lacrosse head coach John Svec said.  “He’s a tremendously leader in the community, as well as for our team.  He always puts his best foot forward and represents the program, his family, and the college to the extreme.”

Peguillan, currently holds a 3.47 GPA in Siena’s highly selective biology program.  The Commack, N.Y. native has been selected to the MAAC All-Academic team each year of her eligibility.

Peguillan is part of Siena's biology program

On the field, the captain has started all 53 games she has appeared in and leads the squad this year in caused turnovers, and is currently eighth all-time in Siena history in that category.  She wishes to use her Siena degree and attend medical school after graduation.

“She is a true example of hard work and how it pays off,” women’s lacrosse coach Andrea Cofrin said. “There’s not a day that goes by that she’s not studying focusing on her academics and the same thing goes for lacrosse.  It’s just one more step in the right direction for her to move on to med school and be a successful doctor.”

The Leo Dufort Student-Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student-Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
