Set to open the program's 19th season in the MAAC, Siena (3-3) has posted a 42-8 regular season record in conference action the past seven years including wins in 34 of its past 37 games. The preseason favorites to win the MAAC, Siena has won five of the past seven regular season championships and advanced to five consecutive title games, winning MAAC Championships in both 2009 and 2011.
Siena's MAAC success has been paralleled by the program's overall assertion as a nationally recognized program since 2007. Over the past seven-plus seasons the Saints have won 79 games, the 10th highest total amongst all Division I programs.
The defending MAAC Regular Season Co-Champions, Marist (2-3) was predicted to finish third in the Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Red Foxes defeated a shorthanded Siena squad 10-9 in overtime last season in Poughkeepsie, snapping an eight-game losing streak against the Saints.
Siena leads the all-time series with Marist 19-13. The Saints' 19 wins over the Red Foxes are the program's most vs. any school and Siena has only played UAlbany more times (35).
The Saints are looking to bounce back following a 10-9 overtime loss here Wednesday against Robert Morris in which Siena held a 7-2 third quarter lead. Red-shirt junior captain Richie Hurley dished out a career-high seven assists and senior attackman Colin Clive scored four goals. Clive now stands just two goals shy of becoming the ninth player in program history to eclipse 100 career goals.
The nation's eighth leading scorer entering the week, Hurley already has 12 more points then any other player in the MAAC with 31 in just six games. Both he and junior Conor Prunty have tallied points in 23 consecutive games, while Clive has scored a point in 22 straight and junior Nate Barry in a team-leading 25 consecutive games.
Junior faceoff specialist Casey Dowd entered the week leading the nation averaging 9.8 groundballs per game and won 18 of 23 faceoffs Wednesday, tying a career-high with 14 groundballs. With his 18 faceoff wins, Dowd past Scott Montgomery '09 and now holds the program record with 475 career faceoffs won.
