LOUDONVILLE, NY - On a gorgeous day in Loudonville, the Siena College men's lacrosse team defeated Robert Morris University by a score of 11-3 this afternoon. Juniors Greg Powell (Guilderland, NY) and Matt Walsh (Northport, NY) led the Saints in scoring with three goals each as Siena was able to play their entire squad en-route to their third win of the season. A total of seven Saints scored goals in the most balanced offensive effort of the season.
Siena jumped out to an early 4-1 lead through one quarter of play, led by one of Powell's three goals and one assist. The Saints fired 13 shots on goal, while holding the Colonials to three in the decisive first period. Powel continued his quality play as of late, finishing with a team-high six shots on goal for four total points. Freshman James Mikel (Rochester, NY) scored his first career goal, while this season's leading scorer Walsh (20) finished with five points, three goals and two helpers.
Junior goaltender John Bamford (Woodbridge, VA) finished with seven saves, holding the Colonial scoreless off of six shots on goal in the second quarter. RMU used three goalies between the pipes to stop 15 shots.
Junior Eric DeSalvatore (Clifton Park, NY) led the Colonial effort with two goals while freshman Alex Sewell added a goal and freshman Andrew Watt tacked on two assists.
Statistically, Siena won every category, finishing with 34 shots, while holding RMU to 20 and scooping up 39 groundballs to the Colonials 17. Siena was able to control possession throughout winning 11 of 18 face-offs and clearing the ball at a rate of 18-19, with Robert Morris finishing 7-18.
Siena will travel to Marist on Wed., April 27 at 7:00 p.m. and then return home to close out the regular season and salute the 2005 senior class on Saturday, April 30 against St. Joseph's at 1 p.m.
