LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Lacrosse scored the last eight goals of the game and held Canisius scoreless for the final 36 minutes in a 14-2 lambasting Saturday afternoon at Siena Turf Field. The win - Siena's seventh in a row - moves the Saints to the precipice of a clinching a MAAC Tournament berth.
With a win by Marist later tonight over Manhattan, Siena (8-3, 4-0) would clinch a spot in the four-team MAAC Tournament for the fourth straight season and fifth time in the past six years.
On Saturday, Siena clearly looked like a team headed to postseason play.
The Saints dominated all facets of the game for the full 60 minutes and out-shot Canisius (2-7, 1-3) 47-25 in winning for the 19th time in the past 21 home games. The win was the Saints' fourth straight over the Griffs.
The usual suspects - Danny Martinsen and Bryan Neufeld - once again led the offensive onslaught. Martinsen led all scorers with seven points including four goals, while Neufeld scored twice and added four helpers for six total points. Martinsen extended his scoring streak to 28 consecutive games and goal scoring streak to 18 in a row, while Neufeld pushed his point total to an amazing 48 points during the Saints' current winning streak.
Equally impressive was the Siena defense. The Saints held Canisius without an even strength goal and Tom Morr made seven saves between the pipes. Additionally, Siena held the nation's fourth leading goal scorer Simon Giourmetakis scoreless.
The two goals bequeathed were the fewest by the Saints in three years as the Green and Gold continued their conference dominance by winning for the 28th time in their past 29 MAAC Regular Season games.
